The first breakfast of the term was one of the times that she was both happy and extremely frustrated to be forced to attend breakfast. Normally she skipped the early morning meal, preferring to instead merely skip the meal and then have a larger portion for lunch, to even things out without having to wake up any earlier than she absolutely needed.
When Clarissa had made her way down to the Great Hall, she slumped over to her house's table, sitting down and almost instantly taking a cup of coffee, adding milk and sugar, before quickly drinking the entire cup. She sat for a moment, merely staring at the empty cup as it refilled with the hot black liquid after a mere word.
Slowly Clarissa started to feel more awake and human, as more students filed into the hall, several of which seemed to be about as loving of the morning hour as she was. Clarissa shook her head, waiting for her friends to wake up and get down to the great hall. Either that or for her to get her schedule so that she could figure out if she needed to be awake this early. Because depending on how early she needed to be awake today, the idea of a nap was sounding rather appealing at the moment, even with the coffee.
Clarissa looked around the Great Hall, which was a little more full now that more students were entering the room, several seeming to be about as sleepy as she was. There were even a few professors who looked to be about as tired as the majority of the students. That was always an amusing sight, to see the professors at the first breakfast, because it seemed that a lot of the professors out of their elements, and acting like normal human beings, rather than the authority figures that they would automatically morph into within a few hours.

Regulus was definitely a morning person, though at the same time, he would rather be up at night. Maybe he was just someone who was flirtatious and happy most of the time. He emerged from the Slytherin common room, long before the others Slytherins would, and began the walk to the Great Hall. It was to be the first day of classes, he was to get his schedule, but none of that bothered him. He was bothered about anything right now. He could walk up to Clarissa and actually talked to her in public without sending an owl to set up and meeting.
He sighed as he walked into the Great Hall, turning his charming smile on. The Slytherin table was empty, the Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs were almost all out, save a few souls, and there were a clump of Ravenclaws scattered around. He spotted Clarissa in the group and decided on something rather rash. He knew that if he did what he was thinking about doing, every eye in the Great Hall would be on them and the rumor mill would have announced it to rest of the school by lunchtime, but he didn't care.
He decided to go for it so he walked over to the Ravenclaw table. As he had thought, everyone was watching the scary Slytherin walk over to the Ravenclaw table. He sat right beside Clarissa and smiled at her. "Good morning, sleeping beauty. Care to join the world of the living?" He put his arm around her playfully, nudging her a little. "You look like the walking dead. What time did you get to sleep tonight? You had to have known that you would have to come to breakfast."
He knew that his teasings would eventually get him hit, but he didn't care. How much damage could she do to him? She was a lot weaker than him body wise, and he had lived, and fought, with Sirius for years. He could handle anything the little Ravenclaw threw at him, as long as it wasn't a hex of some kind, though he could probably block it easy.

Clarissa had finished a second cup of coffee and was feeling a bit more awake, maybe with another cup and some breakfast she would be human again. So perhaps the nap wouldn't happen, even if she didn't have to be in class quite yet. Of course she could always just curl up in the common room with the book that she had been meaning to finish for the last month.
The first thing that Clarissa did when someone sat beside her and threw an arm around her shoulders was to swiftly elbow them in the stomach, then stand quickly while spinning around with her wand aimed straight at the person's forehead, a hex ready to fly out of her mouth at the least provocation. When she saw that it was Regulus, she punched him in the arm again just for startling her, the wand still aimed at his head. "Regulus, you bastard. I should hex you just for sneaking up on me like that. And you should probably not talk again. It's not helping your case, quite the opposite, actually."
Clarissa sat back down, her wand still threateningly in her hand. She looked pointedly at the wand to warn him that if he did anything out of hand again that she wasn't afraid of hexing him for it. As she was getting a bagel from a little farther down the table, she noticed the shocked looks on most of the other students, as well as a little curiosity. She shook her head to herself, muttering under her breath. "Honestly. Mind your own bloody business." She turned and glared at Regulus again, certain that he had planned this, just to see what the other students would do/say.

Regulus laughed as soon as Clarissa hit him. He had expected as much. The laughter caused even more eyes to turn their way, but it was more for the fact that they knew who it was and were hoping for his attention. When he ignored them and continued to stare at Clarissa and her offending wand, they gave her angry glances. He laughed again when she seemed to mutter that they should mind their own business. When she had sat back down, wand still in hand and ready to hex, he spoke, laughter in his voice.
"I always had you for a non-morning person. You just seem the type to be grumpy when you're up before you have to be. And you can hex me all you want, but I believe that I will keep coming back and teasing you, because who else is going to put up with me? Narcissa? She has to. She's family. You, on the other hand, could have gotten rid of me six years ago, but here we are."
He leaned back, ignoring the wand in her hand. He glanced down at his own hand and the wand that was resting there under the table. He was quick with the wand and had had it out as soon as she had pulled hers. It was more out of habit that he had pulled it, but it was a little weird that he had pulled it on Clarissa whom he knew he wouldn't hurt, though he was still going to use it to his advantage. He smiled pleasantly, as if nothing was wrong, and spoke so that only she could hear him.
"I might be stupid to sneak up on you, but I am a Black, afterall. Defensive moves are what we learn from birth. I can hex you just as fast as you can hex me. Put the wand away and I'll calm my morning person-ness up. Deal?"

James smiled lightly to himself as he made his way to the Great Hall. He was STARVING!!! He wanted food, and he wanted it now! Plus, he had to get his schedule. He was hoping his classes would be late morning, early afternoon. That way he could sleep in and still have time to schedule Quidditch try outs and practices. He hummed slightly to himself, running a hand through his hair. His black robes billowed behind him slightly as he moved forward, practically running down the last steps that led to the Great Hall. When he walked in, he waved to a few other students, having a quick conversation with them. They pointed behind him, at what was already gossip. He smiled, turning his head to look.
His mile grew bigger (and slightly more evil) when he saw Sirius’s younger brother. His smile turned into a grin as he made his way over to the Ravenclaw table, waving to a few of them, and throwing around a few Quidditch threats playfully to some of the team members. He then plopped himself down on the other side of Regulus. “Well, well . . . look what the cat dragged in! If it isn’t Baby Regulus. How’s your harpy of a Mum? She die yet?” he asked, a slight hopeful edge to his voice. He then looked at the girl he had his arm around. He easily recognized her as one of Lily’s friends and the Daughter of the Minister of Magic.
“Ooooh. Wittle Reggie’s moving up in the world, is he? Are you tired of playing with school girls? Careful, you’ll have a team of Auror’s sent on yeah. And your family name of Black won’t help you . . . “ he said. He then turned to the girl. “Morning Kingsley. How are the Smart birds?” he asked in a friendly tone.

Clarissa was starting to get furious with Regulus for laughing at her when she hit him. There was a faint itch to her wand hand as if it wanted to hex Regulus, just for being annoying. She had to admit, it was very tempting, if for nothing but that he had purposely came over in the middle of the Great Hall during the first breakfast, most likely just in order to make a scene. Her face was very likely scarlet by now, with a mixture of frustration and a little embarrassment for having been made a scene of in the middle of the meal.
At Regulus' comment that she could have gotten rid of him six years ago, Clarissa nodded. "Yeah, and I should have gotten rid of you when I had the chance. If I had known how obnoxious you are, I would have never helped the lost little first year." Sure she probably still would have helped him, but she couldn't claim a fair temper.
Clarissa heard a familiar joking voice and turned to see James Potter walking towards her and Regulus. Oh boy, this could get ugly real fast. As James mocked Regulus, Clarissa merely ate some of the bagel sitting in front of her. Although when James seemed to be teasing Regulus for being close to her, she realized that he was still likely trying to make things appear different from what they were, as Regulus seemed to like making scenes in public, regardless of the opinions of the others involved. Clarissa shrugged his arm from her shoulders and quickly elbowed him again. He was probably trying to see what would happen when Sirius walked into the Great Hall. And Clarissa did not want to deal with a fight.
Clarissa huffed at James' mention of having a team of Aurors brought down on Regulus for socializing with her. Of course, if her father heard about it, he probably would get upset, but hopefully not to the extent of a team of Aurors. "Regulus is not doing anything with me, except trying to get a hex first thing in the morning. And if he were smart he would have listened when I told him to get lost. Since you're Head Boy, is it out of line for me to hex him in open, even in front of professors?" Clarissa smiled mischievously as she asked James the code of conduct, as well as threaten Regulus again. He was seriously pushing his luck with her, and hopefully he wouldn't push it past breaking with the morning hour.
When James said hello to her asking about the 'smart birds', Clarissa laughed under her breath. "Apparently they're enjoying a free show. Not to mention the other houses as well." She was friendly with James, because she knew that Lily would likely have her head if she were anything but. Of course she wouldn't have been anything but friendly with him regardless, but it was still another reasoning that he was dating one of her best friends. And at least he had eased up on the affection. Because this time last year, Clarissa probably would have told him (in not too kind words) to get lost, after he spent most of the time almost stalking Lily.
A sudden thought came into her head and Clarissa almost groaned out loud. Where there was James, there would soon be Sirius. And with all the things going on between Regulus and Sirius, walking into the Great Hall to find Regulus with his arm around her was likely not going to be a good idea for Sirius. Hopefully Regulus would smarten up before his older brother made his entrance. Because if what Regulus had said at Diagon Alley last week was true, then there would most likely be a scene between the Black brothers, and that was NOT something Clarissa wanted to be involved in.

Luckily Lily had always been a morning person. Of course she would be. She lived in the muggle world and always had to mow the lawns before the sun got too hot out during the summers. And she sometimes made breakfast. So when she was in Hogwarts, nothing was different. Unless of course she for some reason fell asleep with James. Then she'd never want to get up.
But last night had been a long night as she was helping the first years settle in and everything, with memories of her first year being brought back to her. And of course a smile was placed on her lips the whole time. Grinning she grabbed her uniform skirt{pushing the thoughts away of what James and her had done in the Heads Compartment on the Train ride over before they went their separate ways.
Once everything was set, with her hair in a ponytail, she slipped on her black flatts and adjusted her socks so they were up to her knees, and she slid her robe on over her shoulders, making sure that it covered the spots James decided to leave her last night. Once she was ready she ran all the way down to the great hall and smiled once she arrived.
There in front of her were one of her best friends and the love of her life. Grinning widely she ran up to Clari and hugged her tight. " Clari! I missed you!" She smiled and hugged her again before backing up and smiling at James and Regulus. " Morning Regulus." She smiled politely then went to James, placing a light hand on his arm. " You okay?"

James face lit up as she asked to hex him. He covered his eyes and waved at her slightly. “Go ahead!!! And while you’re doing it, make sure it’s really, really, REALLY embarrassing.” he said. He then spread his fingers slightly to peak at her to see if she was going to hex him. He then laughed slightly. “Kingsley, why would I care what you do? As long as it’s to a Slytherin, I don’t give a damn what you do . . . but I wanna be there to see it.” he said. It didn’t matter to James that the teachers were watching. He was after all a trouble maker . . . And then he remembered He was Head Boy and frowned.
“Apparently they're enjoying a free show. Not to mention the other houses as well."
He made a slight face. “The Leading Males ugly. You chose the wrong Black, mate.” he said with a grin. His attention was then drawn to Lily as she came over, his face lighting up like a Christmas tree. “Lily!!!!” he said. If he had had a tail, it would have been wagging like crazy. But seeing how he didn’t have a tail, he simply moved slightly to wrap an arm around her waist, pulling her close to him, as if to say ‘Mine!’ He then nodded his head. “Why wouldn’t I be okay? I haven’t seen Snivellus yet . . . I might luck out with my classes . . . You’re my girlfriend . . . This is our last year . . . I’d say I was okay.” he said.

Regulus sighed, slipping his wand into his robes. James Potter was the last person he wanted to see in the morning. He gave Clarissa an apologetic look, completely sincere about it. He turned to James with a charming smile though, pretending that nothing was wrong. He shrugged at the comment about his mom. "Unfortunately, Potter, my mother is still very much breathing." He thought that it was obvious about his dislike of being his mother's favorite, but apparently, James didn't know that.
When Lily came up, Regulus was glad for the distraction from himself. He had come close to getting into a lot of trouble with a small spell and a lot of cursing for James' comments. Then Lily spoke to him and he found himself doing something he never thought he would do with a Muggle born: he gave a sincere smile, meaning it completely, and responded in a kind voice. "Good morning, Lily. You are looking well. How was your summer?"
He made the effort, not just for Clarissa, but because he genuinely liked Lily Evans as a person. She was kind and caring, everything he himself was not, but she seemed to have an evil streak in her. It showed in the fact that she was friends with James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter. Regulus had nothing against Lily Evans and wanted to make sure she knew that. He wasn't flirting with her, as he normally would, but just being a nice guy.
He turned to Clarissa and smiled. "I think I should be getting back to my table. I'll talk to you this afternoon. You're still going to help me with Charms this year, right? I'm hopeless." They had made a deal the year before that if she helped him pass Charms, he would help her fly on a broom in case she ever needed to ride one in a pinch. Now that they were outed as friends, he could actually speak about their tutoring sessions in public.

Sirius unfurled himself from the sheets in Gryffindor tower a few minutes after he was supposed to wake up. Groggy to a point that he spoke in a sinuous line of curses beneath his breath, Sirius pulled himself out of the bed and began to get ready for his first morning as a seventh year Gryffindor. This was it, his final year. He'd be sure to make the most of it.
After dressing in his uniform and robes, Sirius descended the stairs into the common room, grabbing an apple from the table beside the door before darting out the portrait hole, his destination evident-- the Great Hall. The journey to the hall was quite eye opening. Many people, perhaps coming from the hall, gave him a knowing look and he could only return them with a raised brow.
"He doesn't know," one girl whispered to her friend as he passed. He walked by them, looking over his shoulder at the girls who continued to whisper behind manicured hands. He scrunched up his nose and continued. Finally reaching the Hall, he paused on the threshold, looking first to the Gryffindor table and when he didn't see his friends there, around the hall at large until he found his target. James and Lily--at the ravenclaw table--with his brother Regulus. Now this was a strange group. He took a bite out of his apple as he walked over. He called greetings to all he passed and got the same knowing looking. What exactly was he missing?
"Fancy seeing you over here, mate...Lily?" He said, regarding them first with a playful smile on his pink lips. He then turned his focus to Clarissa, the minister's daughter who he knew barely anything about, save the occasional gossip or badmouth rumor. He grinned at her and his eyes danced, but then his eyes fell on his brother and the light in his eyes quickly suffocated and died.
"Regulus," he said giving him a forced smile simply to be polite. He turned back to James, took another bite of his apple and while chewing on a small bit asked...
"What exactly am I missing. Everyone's looking at me like I'm sort of muggle science project." He looked over his shoulder and just like he figured, saw many people look away. What? Did they think he would blow up after seeing his friend converse with his brother? That hadn't even crossed his mind...unfortunately. It seems he had matured considerably over the summer. Had this happened last year he was sure he would have cursed Regulus into oblivion and guffawed while doing so. Now, he only felt a bit irritated by the situation.
It was rather odd.

Post by Narcissa Black on Jan 29, 2009 20:27:41 GMT -5
Narcissa looked out the window and pretended that she wasn't alone.
She could hear the sound of the other girls in her dormitory breathing in and out deeply, still asleep, but their slumbering bodies offered no comfort to the youngest Black. Of course, Narcissa was used to this empty feeling in the pit of her chest, like a small balloon of vacant space. It was an insatiable cold, like winter nights in the arctic. It never ended, not even when the sun blushed bloodily across her snowy complexion, and the darkness clung tightly to her lungs. She was suffocated by it, but somehow she knew that she'd continue to draw breath no matter how tightly it sqeezed at her insides. Narcissa was a member of the noble house of Black, after all, and Blacks never gave in to the cold. They were survivors.
Sighing, Narcissa turned away and caught a glimpse of Pernella Pierce rolling out of bed groggily, curly brown hair tangled from sleep. The skinny sixth year yawned, then waggled her eyebrows at Narcissa by way of morning greeting.
"Awright, Black? God, it's fucking freezing in here."
Narcissa raised an eyebrow and tilted her head.
"Really? I hadn't noticed."
Already dressed in her black Hogwarts skirt, collared button-up, tie, and robe, Narcissa ran feminine fingers through her long blonde hair and pursed her lips in boredom.
"You always were an ice cold bitch, Narcissa. No wonder you never notice when it's frigid."
"Fuck you, Pierce."
Wrinkling her nose in the direction of the grinning Slytherin witch, Narcissa swished past her haughtily and almost made it to the door before Pernella grabbed a handful of her robe and held on tight.
"Anytime you'd like, sweetheart."
Narcissa whirled around, whipped out her wand, and hissed "Relashio!" Red sparks hissed out of the tip of her wand, and Pierce released Narcissa's robe with a yelp.
"Don't touch me again, Pierce. You'll regret it if you do."
Stalking out of her dormitory with a bang that undoubtedly woke up the rest of the sixth year girls, Narcissa stormed through the Slytherin Common Room, dodged a grinning Goyle, and only breathed easy once she was safely moving away from Pierce and up towards the Great Hall.
Upon entering, she didn't spare a glance for any of the other tables but went straight to her own, head held high and nose pointed snootily upwards. She took a seat at the nearly empty Slytherin table, exhaled imperceptibly, and finally looked up after a few seconds of self compsure. She saw a host of sleepy professors, all of them blinking their way through cup after cup of coffee, several groggy Hufflepuffs, and, standing near the Ravenclaw table, her charming cousin Regulus.
At once Narcissa felt a compulsory streak of blackest jealousy, and then she shoved it away. Yes, that was her cousin standing next to Kingsley, chatting it up like a common flirt. Yes, that was Lily Evans and James Potter next to him, tossing their sly insults and dribbly love-looks back and forth indiscriminately. Yes, it made her perfectly pure blood boil. But Narcissa turned her eyes away from the scene pointedly, ignoring it all with hearty determination. She loved Regulus, and even though she disapproved of what he was doing, she knew better than to raise an issue. He had a job to do, and that was all. Soon he'd stop these visits to the other tables. Soon he'd stop talking to Clarissa Kingsley. Soon he'd return things back to the way they had always been, and Narcissa could put this entire mess behind her.
Grabbing the jug of milk near her left elbow, Narcissa poured herself a cup and turned to the depressingly drab fifth year next to her, striking up a conversation. It would be boring, but the distraction would keep her preoccupied for a while. She didn't want to deal with her emotions, and she didn't want to see the truth. Regulus was only doing what he was supposed to...
But it hurt.

Clarissa grinned brightly as James said that it was perfectly fine for her to hex Regulus. Of course had he not gotten her angry, she would not be threatening one of her friends with hexing them. But then of course, she had never said she didn't have a temper. And Regulus should have known that before he decided to make a scene involving her. "Thank you, Potter!" Clarissa turned back to Regulus and was actually about to pull her wand and hex him when someone else seemed to appear. Although at James' comment about her having an ugly leading man and having chosen the wrong Black, a faint blush crossed her cheeks. Merlin was everyone so keen on teasing her?
Clarissa smiled brightly and hopped up from the bench to throw her arms around Lily, giggling with her friend. "Lily! I've missed you too!" Clarissa smiled at Lily when she moved over towards James almost instantly. It felt good to see her friend that happy, even though it was a bit of a shock at first when Lily had told her she was dating James Potter, who had spent most of the last several years following Lily around like a lost puppy, or worse a crazed stalker. But oh well, Lily seemed happy, and Clarissa couldn't argue that James was infatuated with Lily. So she couldn't really say anything bad about the relationship.
Clarissa giggled at the exchange between James and Lily before noticing who else had entered the Great Hall, as was given away by the flutter of gossip. And when she looked up, sure enough Sirius Black had approached the table. Clarissa grinned when he looked in her direction, and she could tell when he noticed his brother sitting beside her. Although at least there hadn't been a fight broke out ... yet. So she supposed it was doing pretty good. And when Sirius asked why everyone was looking at him awkwardly, the blush on Clarissa's cheeks deepened. Of course she hadn't done anything, but the way things were looking made it seem like much worse.
As Regulus stood to leave, Clarissa frowned and nodded, remembering once again that she was furious with him. When he asked if she would still help him with his Charms work, she was almost tempted to refuse him. "Yes, go back to your dark corner and think of other nasty plots, Regulus. As for helping with Charms, I ought to hex you from here to the bottom of the Black Lake and back for your nonsense. How's that for tutoring? First hand experience with defensive and blocking charms." Clarissa frowned and whirled back to the plate sitting on the table in front of her. Of course she would quickly calm down and probably regret what she had said, but Regulus had hit her temper, and that was never a pretty thing.

Regulus felt that spark of anger flair through him at Clarissa's comments, but suppressed it. It was until Sirius showed up that the sadness began to seep into him. He nodded to his brother as he gave him a greeting, standing slowly so as not to get four wands pointed into his direction.
"Sirius, good to see that you are well." That was something he definitely meant. No matter how much he didn't get along with his brother, he still cared about him.
He backed away from the table a few steps before finally turning to Clarissa for a response to her comments about Charms. For the first time, he let a little of the real Regulus slip out, feeling outnumbered and a deep anger.
"I understand, Clarissa. I guess you'll want to hang out with your Gryffindor friends for now. Of course, Slytherins aren't good enough for you, as our Head Boy so adequately put it, he doesn't give a damn what happens to Slytherins."
He knew that this was digging him in an even deeper hole, but at the moment, he was more hurt than anything, though that was hiding the deeper, darker rage that lived deep inside him. "I'll return to my friends then."
He turned to his brother one last time, letting his face soften. "It really is good to see that you're doing well, Sirius. I hope things stay well for you." He turned to look at the Slytherin table, spotting Narcissa. "Narcissa's waiting for me. I'll see you around, maybe."

Narcissa looked up as Regulus approached, and while she could tell that he was carefully keeping his composure, there was fire in his eyes.
"Had a rough morning?"
Narcissa tried to sound casual, but there was a catch in her voice. She reminded herself that any irritation she felt was unwarranted, and with extreme effort, she turned a smile in Regulus' direction. Her lips lifted, pretty pink skin against pearly teeth, but there was nothing in that smile at all. Nothing but empty, absent angst.
"You should try some coffee. Maybe it will take the edge off."
Her voice was a drawl, but her eyes became suddenly engaged, flickering over Regulus possessively.
"I saw wands," she whispered softly, pouring him a cup of coffee distractedly. "Kingsley pulled one on you..."
She listed these observations with a guise of nonchalance, and the fifth year Slytherin that she had been conversing with (only to abruptly ignore once Reg arrived) stopped eavesdropping.
"Pierce made a pass at me again. God, she's starting to get aggressive."
Narcissa hoped that the change of topic would please Regulus, but her own countenance became bitter as she spoke. "It's not that I don't appreciate attention..." Narcissa poured coffee into her own empty cup and stirred in a dollop of cream. "Just not from her. She's too...boney. And plain. Not to mention the fact that her brother's a squib." As though this ended the matter, Narcissa failed to mention that she hated Pernella for more than her defective bloodline. The girl had always been rather nasty towards her, but Narcissa would never admit to having her feelings hurt.
"What's new with you? Any new wives-in-waiting that I should know about?"

"Good morning, Lily. You are looking well. How was your summer?"
"Why thank you Regulus you're looking fine yourself. My summer was well. Especially the last couple of weeks. How about yours? Was it okay I hope?" Sure Reggie was a Slytherin and a pure blood but that didn't matter to Lily. As he was one of those that treated her with respect. Which she was shocked as Narcissa was constantly insulting her. Especially when Lucius or Bellatrix had been around last year. However since he treated her with respect so did she. Probably one of the only Slytherins that she did.
Her face instantly started glowing as she felt James wrap his arm around her waist. And while he began his reply to her she allowed her forehead to lean against his. She hadn't been able to give him a proper greeting this morning as he had left before she did this morning. But she did remind herself that they were around their best mates. However she couldn't help but kiss him lightly when she heard his reply. Her heart skipping a couple of beats as she heard him say she was his girlfriend. "Well as long as my baby is okay." She grinned at him and removed her forehead from his as she didn't want to get too carried away.
"Morning Sirius."
Lily laughed along with the whole muggle science project thing as she layed her head against James' chest, closing her eyes for a moment before playfully glaring at Sirius. " What's with the muggle analogies?" Lily laughed again and winked at Clari. " So what's on the agenda for this year everyone?"
