Peter Pettigrew was not often found by his lonesome. In fact, it seemed every waking moment was spent lurking in someone's shadow. Yet there were those brief moments where he did find comfort in solitude. Whenever these rare opportunities occurred, Peter could usually be found in the library. He was not a “book worm” or any of the other insults people said about Remus. He was also not much of a reader. It just seemed to Peter that the library was the safest place to be. If anyone started a fight, Madam Pince would at the troublesome spot so fast, people would think she apparated. Peter would know. He found out that his first year.
There was one other thought that nudged its way forward when Peter had to decide where he wanted to spend a few hours. He thought how wonderful it would be to seem smart. He was constantly in the shadows. James and Sirius were good at almost anything they tried. Remus was just plain smart. Peter... well... Peter was good at potions. Whenever James and Sirius did not feel like working in Potions, he would be there, to do it for them. Maybe if he would have started Hogwarts a year earlier, he would be noticed. Lily and Snape made sure that he would not receive recognition. So maybe if he did some extra studying, he would be able to impress everyone, too. Sure, it was not likely... but maybe...
Well, that was the thought. There were a few Potions books sitting on his table. They were all closed though. Instead of studying, Peter was gazing out the window at the blue sky. He had decided sitting at a table near the back of the library would cause him the least amount of detection. He was very attentive to studies until a wisp of a wind flew by him, causing his hair to tickle his ears. Apparently someone had opened the window. At that moment, Peter regretted deciding against studying on the grounds. He had a chance of getting more work done. A small chance, but a chance none-the-less.
Tearing his eyes away from the window, Peter focused again on the books near him. He decided if he could just study for an hour, he would reward himself with a walk on the grounds. Yes, he could be patient enough for that. The nearest Potions book was pulled towards him and he read the cover while yawning. It was a royal purple book, hardcover, with gold letters across the front that read 'Potions for All Purposes.' It was very thick, and as Peter began to read, he decided it was also very boring. He could do this though. He could.
