Severus hated the month before school started back up. It was always the same song and dance. His mother would run around the house trying to figure out where the money she had saved up was, his father would object to his going into the 'Freak Show' that he called the wizarding world. In the end, Severus would end up taking the bag from his mother and walking out of the house when the fight began to ensue. He would walk to the Leaky Cauldron, get a room for the rest of the month, and the head into the stores, avoiding all the other Hogwarts students there for school supplies.
He walked along the streets, buying his supplies from second hand shops and stalls along the streets before heading back to the Leaky Cauldron to drop his things off. He ended up bored, so he headed right back out to Diagon Alley to get some ice cream from Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour. It was the last little bit of money that he had left, though he knew that his mother would eventually find a way to slip him something. For the moment, he just wanted to sit outside, people watch, and not think about anything that would anger or upset him. Hard to do with all the Gryffindors walking by, but he would try to manage.

This whole summer had been spent practically at the Potters. Ever since she and James had gotten together it was hard to find them separated. They were always connected in some way shape or form. But not today. No, James was with the rest of his Marauders and Lily was going to get some stuff for school while she waited for Clari to come over. The two were just going to hang out in her bedroom while they waited for James and them to get back home. And Lily desperately needed some new robes and she wanted to get some ice cream or a treat or two to take back home to the boys.
Smiling she walked along the busy streets of Diagon Alley, when she heard one of the girls from Hogwarts calling to her. " Lily!!!!! Over here!" Grinning Lily walked over to the Ravenclaw and hugged her. " Hey how're you?" The girl smiled and the two of them talked for a while about their summers, then came the question that she would be asked countless times. " So...did you get head Girl? Has your letter came yet?" The red head smiled. " That is something you'll have to wait until Hogwarts to figure out." The two walked and got their robes Lily got a couple with different colors, navy blue, crimson, gold, black, and she also got a dress in case she needed it some time this year. And once they were done they went to Florish and Blotts and bought some books, and some for casual reading. That is until, she saw Severus Snape.
Immediately her heart tore as she saw him. They had been the best of friends. He was there for her when she had dated Amos, the break up of those two, and her couple of other boyfriends. But what was he going to say about her and James? His rival. His hardcore hatred. But it was the same wasn't it? How he was best friends with Lucius and Narcissa? Narcissa was her rival... no it wasn't the same. Sighing Lily turned her attention towards her classmate and she smiled. " Hey I'm going to go ahead and head back home. See you at Hogwarts!" Lily smiled at her before making her way over to Severus. She honestly felt sorry for the guy. "Severus, are you alright?" She asked honestly wandering if this was a good idea. The last time she had talked or tried to defend him he had called her a mudblood. And said that he didn't need her help.

Severus had been in the world of his mind where he had a happy family life and he got along with everyone at Hogwarts. It was because of this that he jumped when he heard the sweet voice of Lily Evans, a voice he knew so well. He looked up, wondering why she would have thought something was wrong, then he saw the look on his own face in the glass of the store window. His frown deepened and he sighed shaking his head. "Same old, same old, Lily." He gained a little courage and gestured to the chair across from him. "Buy you an ice cream?"
He slipped a hand into his pocket to make sure that he had enough before turning away from her. She wasn't going to sit down with him. No. He had done the unthinkable. He had lost his best friend over something he had picked up from peopled that his mother wouldn't have approved of him hanging out with. He probably would even be in Slytherin if he wasn't the last heir of Salazar Slytherin. He might even be in Gryffindor with Lily. And they would probably be together. He shook his head and turned back to her with a small smile. "I will understand if you don't want to join me, Lily, but I need to let you know that I am well and truly sorry for what I said. I was angry and upset and humiliated, and had spent to much time with Lucius when I knew that I shouldn't have. And ... I'm rabbling. Sorry."

Of course she still felt a little more awkward. The way they had been for years, and Lils had been doing what she always did, standing up for him. Because she was the only one who could get James Potter to stop torturing him. As the others only encouraged. And suddenly, he called her a mudblood?
"Same old, same old, Lily. "Buy you an ice cream?"
The red head smiled at him. He wouldn't have to buy her an ice cream. She had her own money. And she knew that his family was struggling with other stuff right now. "I will understand if you don't want to join me, Lily, but I need to let you know that I am well and truly sorry for what I said. I was angry and upset and humiliated, and had spent to much time with Lucius when I knew that I shouldn't have. And ... I'm rabbling. Sorry." The girl grinned lightly. " Same old Severus. Always rambling."
Although the tone was playful. "Just don't let it happen again. I realize, you were under a lot of stress. And anger and humiliation. But if you can fall that easily being just angry, what're you going to do if you're furious? " Lily asked him casually but shook it off. " It may take me a while to fully forgive you but, I think the ice cream is a start. Although I'll buy." After that she walked over to the chair that he had gestured towards earlier. [/size]

Severus couldn't help but to smile ever so slightly at Lily. The smile disappeared when she said that she couldn't forgive him completely just yet. He looked down at his hands while she sat down, speaking so low that only she would be able to hear him. "I had no right to call you that, Lily. I am no different, even if my mother is a witch. It was wrong of me." He was just as humiliated about it now as he had been then.
He nodded and gestured for her to pay. "If you insist, as always." He blushed slightly and smiled at her. It was like they were becoming friends again, and maybe they were. He had killed their friendship before, now he had to gain her trust again. It was going to be as weird as their first few years as friends when she didn't believe him about the wizarding world or that incident with her sister. It would take time, but he was willing to give up as much time as he could. He had learned over the last few years that Lily was the only person he really trusted in this world.
He took a bite of his ice cream, trying to think of something to say that wasn't another apology. He knew that she would eventually grow tired of his apologies, no matter how sincere he was. He looked up, meeting her gaze, and gestured toward the ice cream stand. "Same as always?"
